In Townscaper, you can build a beautiful town from the ground up, using the simplest of controls to design and organize your little utopia. This is one of the most charming indie games on the Nintendo Switch, and it’s a shining example of how Switch titles can be more of a creative outlet than an actual game. Whether you’re looking for a sandbox to craft new worlds in or an intriguing survival experience, Minecraft is an absolute gem. This is one sandbox game that you can’t miss out on. You can play in both local or online multiplayer, and there are no notable performance issues for either. Multiplayer is decent enough in Minecraft on the Nintendo Switch, although I would have loved to see the addition of voice chat. The controls are intuitive for the most part, and it’s easy to pick up. It’s one of the most iconic survival games in history, and it plays very well. Minecraft has an instantly recognizable aesthetic, and it looks brilliant on the Nintendo Switch. There’s no immediate story to Minecraft, although there’s lore and whatnot if you look for it. This game offers a true sandbox experience, throwing players into the middle of a brand new, randomly generated world and leaving them to fight, craft and explore on their own. Whilst you’ve almost certainly already heard of it, it would remiss of me to not include it in a list of the best sandbox games on Switch. Minecraft is one of the most iconic sandbox games in the world. While some areas of the game are a little clunky (the combat system isn’t perfect), it performs well and looks great on the console, too. You’ll have to work through each chapter, building up a fortress to survive each wave of monsters and developing your skills as you go.ĭragon Quest Builders is a great example of how to fuse a sandbox game with another genre without losing any space for creativity. Offering an interesting mix between a sandbox building game and a classic RPG title, Dragon Quest Builders is one of the best adventure games that offers players an immense amount of freedom. It’s one of the best sandbox games on the Nintendo Switch, hands down. The world is vast and it feels alive, and the gameplay itself is satisfying. Terraria is a huge game with heaps of content to unpack and explore. It is worth noting that the controls are a little finicky and take a while to pick up, though. The game plays well on Nintendo Switch, with no notable performance issues. Terraria is a beautiful game, with an iconic pixel art style. You’re dropped into a vibrant, randomly generated world and have to survive, explore and craft, while dealing with monsters and other threats. If you’ve not played Terraria, it’s a sandbox game with an adventure and survival theme to it. For this article, I’ve taken it to mean an open-world/expansive game with limited or no narrative that gives the player ultimate freedom, and Terraria is a great example of this. As with most open-ended genres, the term ‘sandbox’ is up for interpretation.
